Dental offices will need to be using an Amalgam Separation System, Waste Containers and a Dental Line Cleaner.
All products must meet EPA and ISO 11143:2008 quality standards • All Dentists must comply by June 14th, 2020
Why does Amalgam need to be disposed of correctly?
Amalgam contains a lot of Mercury. Mercury causes damage to the brain, lungs and liver in humans. The levels of Mercury enter water streams from Dental facilities poses a risk to the environment and public.
What does the rule entail?
All Dental facilities must use an Amalgam Separation System while disposing of the Amalgam Waste properly. This prevents the Amalgam from entering into local water systems. You must be compliant by June 14th, 2020. All products must meet the EPA and ISO 11143:2008 quality standards and our Amalgam products meet that standard. Are there any exemptions for this EPA Ruling?
Dentists who practice in oral pathology, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics are exempt from the rule.
Dentists who do not place amalgam and only remove amalgam in unplanned or emergency situations (estimated at less than 5 percent of removals) are also exempt.
Mobile dental units are exempt.
Dentists who already have separators are grandfathered for 10 years.
We recommend all dental facilities set up a proper disposal solution for Amalgam waste even if they think they are exempt.
